STN: The Maharashtra Government has approved the Mumbai Metro Line 5 Expansion along with a new corridor called Line 5A. The project will create a 34.2 km metro network across Thane, Bhiwandi, Kalyan, and Ulhasnagar.

The total cost of this project is ₹18,130.55 crore. The approval came through a Government Resolution. The aim is to improve daily travel in this fast-growing part of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

Mumbai Metro Line 5 Expansion: Route and Progress

The Mumbai Metro Line 5 Expansion builds on an earlier plan approved in 2017. The original plan had a 24.9 km elevated corridor with 17 stations between Thane, Bhiwandi, and Kalyan.

The work is divided into two phases.

Phase 1: Thane to Bhiwandi

This section is 11.9 km long with 6 stations. Work is almost complete. Progress has been steady because there were fewer land issues.

Phase 2: Bhiwandi to Kalyan

This section is 10.475 km long with 6 stations. It has faced delays. There were encroachments and changes in the route. The cost for this part is now ₹7,326.13 crore.

Changes in Design Increased Project Cost

The project saw major changes in the last few years. In June 2023, a part of the route between Durgadi and Kalyan was changed from elevated to underground. This increased the cost by ₹1,427 crore.

Later in 2025, more updates were made:

These changes made construction more complex. But they are expected to improve long-term use and reduce future issues.

Metro Line 5A to Extend Connectivity

The government has now limited Line 5 up to Durgadi. To continue the route, a new corridor called Metro Line 5A has been approved.

There are also plans to extend this line to Ulhasnagar in the future.

Combined Network and Key Features

Once completed, Line 5 and Line 5A together will form a 34.2 km metro network with 19 stations. A key interchange will be built at Durgadi.

One important feature is a double-decker structure between Ranjnoli Junction and Durgadi Chowk. This will include:

This design will help reduce traffic in Bhiwandi, which is a busy transport area.

Focus on Better Use of Space

These steps aim to increase daily ridership and support local business growth.
