India’s Metro Rail Expansion
STN: India is rapidly expanding its metro rail network, with several new cities set to have their own systems by 2025. These cities include Navi Mumbai, Surat, Indore, Bhopal, Agra, Meerut (RRTS), and Patna. These systems will provide fast, efficient, and sustainable transportation options for the residents of these cities.
Navi Mumbai
The City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) is developing the system in Navi Mumbai and expects to complete it by 2023. The system will consist of five rail lines covering a total distance of 106.4 kilometers.
Surat
In Surat, the Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC) is building a mass rapid transit system (MRTS). It will have 2 lines and 37 stations to serve the city. They expect to complete and open the first section of the Surat in August 2024.
Indore
The state-run Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation is constructing a rapid transit system in Indore. They will complete it over five phases. In the first phase, five stations of Patna Metro will be operational by March 2025.
Bhopal
In Bhopal, the Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Co Limited (MPMRCL) is building a system with 2 lines and 28 stations to serve the city. The authorities expect to complete and open the priority corridor of the Bhopal Metro in March 2024.
Agra
In Agra, the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) is developing a rapid transit system with two lines. The total length will be 29.65 kilometers. The authorities expect to complete and open the priority corridor of the Agra Metro in June 2024.
Meerut RRTS
The Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) is developing in Meerut to connect the regional nodes in the National Capital Region (NCR) of India. This high-speed commuter service will provide fast, reliable, efficient, and sustainable transportation for residents of Meerut.
Patna
In Patna, the Patna Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (PMRCL) is building an urban Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) with two lines and 24 stops in Patna, the capital city of Bihar. The first section of the Patna Metro Rail is expected to be constructed and opened in August 2024.
