STN: India’s push toward self-reliance in advanced rail technology has taken a major step forward with BEML developing its upcoming BEML High Speed Trainset (Train-B28). Two indigenous 8-coach high-speed trainsets are currently under development for trial runs on the Mumbai–Ahmedabad High Speed Rail Corridor. The development of the BEML High Speed Trainset follows a clear and phased timeline. BEML plans to unveil the full-scale mock-up in the first quarter of 2026. The rollout of the first complete train rake is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2026. The second rake is expected to be completed and rolled out in 2027.

This structured timeline allows sufficient time for testing, validation, and fine-tuning before large-scale deployment. The trainsets will be used primarily for trials on India’s first high-speed rail corridor, ensuring readiness for future expansion.

Speed and Performance Capabilities of BEML High Speed Trainset

Designed to meet global benchmarks, the BEML High Speed Trainset delivers strong performance figures. The trainset is designed and tested for speeds of up to 280 kmph. Its operational speed is set at 249 kmph, aligning with safety and efficiency standards.

Each trainset is expected to run an average of nearly 2,000 kilometers per day during service. Service braking stands at 0.8 meters per second squared, while emergency braking jerk is rated at 1 meter per second cubed. These figures ensure smooth operations along with high safety margins.

Distributed Power Configuration and Passenger Layout

The BEML High Speed Trainset uses an 8-car distributed power configuration. It includes driving trailer cars at both ends and multiple motor and trailer coaches in between. This layout improves acceleration, stability, and redundancy.

The trainset features standard passenger coaches along with a dedicated Executive class coach. It also includes provisions for Persons with Reduced Mobility (PRM). Driving cabs at both ends allow efficient bi-directional operations. The train runs on standard gauge tracks and complies with EN-12663 structural standards.

Structure, Manufacturing, and Indian Condition Readiness

The trainset uses lightweight steel and stainless-steel car bodies. The underframe and exterior structure are engineered to handle aerodynamic loads at 280 kmph. Lightweight epoxy aluminum honeycomb sandwich panels are used in bogie covers, bottom panels, and side covers to reduce weight and improve efficiency.

BEML has designed the BEML High Speed Trainset specifically for Indian operating conditions. It can function in temperatures ranging from –5°C to 50°C. The design accounts for heavy monsoon flooding, dusty desert regions, saline coastal environments, and strong wind conditions.

Manufacturing uses advanced laser welding along with TIG and MIG/MAG welding techniques. BEML will conduct 100 percent non-destructive testing, including ultrasonic, radiography, and magnetic tests. Third-party agencies will validate both structural integrity and weld quality. Full carbody squeeze and structural tests are planned at BEML’s Bengaluru facility in 2026.

This project reflects India’s growing capability to design and manufacture world-class high-speed rail systems domestically.
