STN: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated a 20.8 km section of the Ahmedabad Metro Phase 2 project. The event took place at Gandhinagar’s Sector-1 Station. This section extends the existing Red Line by 15.4 km, starting from Motera Stadium Station to Gandhinagar, Gujarat’s capital.
New Stations and Branch Line
The new stretch of Ahmedabad Metro Phase 2 includes six stations: GNLU, Raysan, Randesan, Dholakuva Circle, Infocity, and Sector 1. In addition, a 5.4 km branch line connects GNLU with GIFT City. This branch line has two new stations: PDPU and GIFT City.
Commercial Services Start on September 17
Ahmedabad Metro Phase 2 will begin commercial operations on September 17. The construction of this section took less than four years since the contract was awarded. Most of the work proceeded smoothly due to an uninterrupted route through the suburban areas.
Construction Details of Phase 2
The 6.478 km viaduct between GNLU and Sector 1, which includes five stations, was built by Ranjit Buildcon (RBL) as part of Package C2. RBL completed the project in October 2023, after receiving the contract in November 2020.
Afcons Infrastructure constructed the 8.12 km viaduct from Motera Stadium to GNLU. They also built the 5.4 km spur to GIFT City as part of Package C1. Afcons finished their work in February 2024, having been awarded the contract in December 2021.
Notable Engineering Features
Ahmedabad Metro Phase 2 includes two significant engineering structures. One is an 810-meter bridge over the Sabarmati River near GIFT City. The other is a 303-meter extradosed bridge over the Narmada Canal.
Trial Runs and Testing
GMRC started trial runs on this line using 3-coach Hyundai Rotem trains in February 2024. The first trial run was between Dholakuva and GNLU. In March 2024, they extended the testing to the GNLU-GIFT City stretch.
Delayed Station Openings
The construction of seven stations between Motera Stadium and GNLU (Package C1) started later than planned. This delay was due to different tendering schedules between Packages C1 and C2. GMRC will open these stations gradually as they become ready.
Final Section Expected by 2026
The final section of Ahmedabad Metro Phase 2, from Sector-1 to Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar, is expected to open in early 2026. Dilip Buildcon is handling this part of the project, which they subcontracted to Ranjit Buildcon.
Operating Hours and Train Frequency
GMRC has not yet announced the exact train frequency for Phase 2. However, it is expected to have headways of about 10 minutes, similar to the Red Line’s Phase 1. Initially, trains from Sector-1 Station to Motera Stadium Station will operate from 7:20 am to 6:40 pm. Trains between GNLU and GIFT City will run from 8:20 am to 6:25 pm. Trains from GIFT City to GNLU will operate from 7:18 am to 6:38 pm.
Ahmedabad Metro Network Overview
With the addition of this section, the Red Line now covers 39.22 km, extending from APMC to Sector 1. The entire Ahmedabad Metro network now spans 58.66 km. This makes it the fifth-largest metro system in India, following Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Kolkata.
Future Expansion Plans
GMRC plans to expand further by building a 7.56 km circular route within GIFT City. They also plan to construct a 5.56 km line to Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport as part of Phase 3.
