STN: H.G. Infra Engineering (HGIEL) launched two pre-stressed concrete U-girders over the Indian Railways’ line at Mongolpuri. This work is part of the 28.92 km Janakpuri West – RK Ashram extension under the Delhi Metro Magenta Line.

This marks the first time U-girders have been launched over railway tracks in India. Previously, contractors used steel open web girders (OWG), steel composite girders, or cantilever bridges. Since the required span was shorter, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), with approval from the Commission of Railway Safety (CRS), opted for 25.412 m U-girders.

The installation took place during a one-hour mega traffic block on February 3. The girders were placed between the upcoming Peeragarhi and Mongolpuri stations.

Scope of Work for U-Girders for Delhi Metro

Package DC-01A, covering 3.5 km, includes four elevated stations between Krishna Park Extension Ramp and Mongolpuri. Initially, this section was part of the 12.375 km Package DC-01, which extended up to Haiderpur-Badli Mor. DMRC awarded the contract for this package in November 2019 to the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation – KEC International (CCECC – KEC) joint venture, with a deadline of 30 months.

Construction started in December 2019 in areas with a clear right-of-way. However, some sections faced delays due to pending approvals for tree cutting. As a result, DMRC removed this section from DC-01 and created a separate package, DC-01A.

After a fresh bidding process, DMRC awarded the contract for DC-01A to HG Infra in January 2023 for Rs. 412.11 crore, with a completion timeline of 24 months. The first U-girder was cast at the Mundka Casting Yard in July 2023, and the first launch took place in Paschim Vihar in October 2023.

Progress on U-Girders for Metro

HGIEL is responsible for launching 140 U-girders for this project. As of February 2024, 63 U-girders have been installed. This section will be the next to open for commercial operations after the 2.03 km Janakpuri West – Krishna Park Extension, which began service in January 2025. The new extension is expected to be operational by Q4 2026.

In a similar project, Larsen & Toubro and HMM Infra launched an OWG in May 2016 for the Pink Line. This structure was placed 4.55 km east of the Mongolpuri section as part of Delhi Metro’s Phase 3 Package CC-28.
