STN: The Surat Metro Phase 1 project has reached another milestone. Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) Amrit has completed its drive and achieved breakthrough at Chowk Bazar Station on the 22.1 km Sarthana – Dream City corridor.

How TBM Amrit Completed Its Drive

TBM S25B, known as Amrit, started tunneling in May 2023. It moved from Surat Railway Station toward Chowk Bazar Station. The machine finished its 2,886-meter first and final drive on 19 August 2025. The breakthrough took place inside package UG-02 / CS-03, which links Surat Railway Station and Chowk Bazar Ramp.

What’s Next for the Parallel Tunnel

Another TBM named Diya is constructing the second tunnel on the same stretch. Diya is expected to complete its drive and breakthrough by December 2025.

Contract Details of Package CS-03

Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC) awarded this contract to J Kumar Infraprojects. The package covers:

  • Value: ₹941.80 crore
  • Scope of work: Twin tunnels and three underground stations – Surat Railway Station, Maskati Hospital, and Chowk Bazar – with their entry and exit structures.

Why This Development Matters

The completion of Amrit’s drive marks steady progress on the corridor. Each breakthrough brings the project closer to providing better urban connectivity. Once Phase 1 is operational, residents will have faster travel options between key locations, easing road congestion and reducing travel time.
