Central Govt Approves Thane Metro Project

STN: The Thane Metro Project, known as the Thane Integral Ring Metro Project, has received approval from the central government for its Detailed Project Report (DPR). The project will span 29 kilometers with 22 stations, and the estimated cost is Rs.12,200 crore.

The Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (MMRCL), also known as MahaMetro, is responsible for implementing the Thane Metro Project. Expected completion date set for the project is 2029.

Project Overview

The foundation stone for the project was laid in December 2018. This will create a circular metro line around Thane city, with a total length of 29 kilometers. Of this, 26 kilometers will be elevated, featuring 20 stations. While the remaining 3 kilometers will be underground, with 2 stations.

The Thane Metro will connect with Mumbai Metro’s Green Line (Line 4) and Orange Line (Line 5) and will also link with the central railway station in Thane.

According to government projections, the Thane Metro Project is expected to handle approximately 6.47 lakh passengers by 2029, increasing to 7.61 lakh by 2035 and 8.72 lakh by 2045.

MahaMetro has issued technical bids to select a Detailed Design Consultant (DDC) for 6 elevated stations. Those 6 elevated stations are between Dr. Kashinath Ghanekar Natyagrah and the waterfront.

Thane Metro Contractor

AECOM, Systra MVA Consultant, and Consulting Engineer Group are currently the sole bidders for the General Consultant contract for the project. The pricing and fare details have not yet been disclosed.
