STN: The Karnataka government has approved the feasibility study for the Bengaluru–Tumakuru Metro Extension, a major step toward improving intercity transit in the state. The announcement was made on 29th September 2025 by Home Minister G Parameshwara during a press briefing in Tumakuru.
The approval moves the project closer to construction. The feasibility study was conducted by a Hyderabad-based firm, selected through a competitive tender by the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL). The study cost ₹3 crore and has now been submitted to the government.
The next step is the preparation of the Detailed Project Report (DPR), also budgeted at ₹3 crore, under a public-private partnership (PPP) model.
About the Bengaluru–Tumakuru Metro Extension
First proposed in the 2024-25 Karnataka State Budget by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, the project plans to extend the Green Line of Namma Metro from Madavara to Tumakuru. Tumakuru is a fast-growing city located 70 km northwest of Bengaluru.
Key highlights of the Bengaluru–Tumakuru Metro Extension include:
- Total length: 59.6 km
- Connecting Madavara to Tumakuru city
- Estimated cost: ₹20,649 crore (Phase 1)
- Development under a PPP model with private sector interest
The extension aims to reduce congestion on National Highway 48 and offer commuters a fast, reliable alternative to road travel.
“This metro link is about connecting cities efficiently and supporting balanced regional growth,” said Mamta Shah, MD & CEO of Urban Infra Group.
Expanding Metro Connectivity in Karnataka
The Tumakuru extension will join Bengaluru’s existing metro network, which currently includes:
- Green Line: 33.46 km (northwest-south connectivity)
- Purple Line: 43.5 km (Whitefield to Challaghatta)
- Yellow Line: 18.8 km (Bommasandra to RV Road, via Electronic City – nearing commissioning)
The new extension will also boost economic activity along the corridor, benefiting industries, logistics hubs, educational institutions, and residential areas.
Project Timeline and Next Steps
With the feasibility study completed, the government will focus on:
- DPR preparation and approvals
- Funding allocation
- Land acquisition
- Alignment finalization
If approvals are secured promptly, construction could start within 2–3 years. This would make it Karnataka’s first intercity metro rail extension.
The Bengaluru–Tumakuru Metro Extension is expected to transform regional connectivity, encourage sustainable mobility, and serve as a model for future intercity metro projects in India.
