STN: The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the doubling of the Bhagalpur–Dumka–Rampurhat railway line. The line covers 177 km and passes through Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal. The project will be carried out at an estimated cost of ₹3,169 crore. The decision was announced on 10 September 2025.

Why the Doubling of Bhagalpur–Dumka–Rampurhat Railway Line Matters

Indian Railways has stated that the doubling of this line will improve mobility and operational efficiency. The project will add capacity to an already busy route. It will also reduce congestion, ensuring smoother and faster train operations.

The doubling work will play an important role in better connectivity for passengers as well as freight services. It is expected to strengthen the railway network in eastern India and improve service reliability.

Development Under PM Gati Shakti Plan

The project is part of the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan. This plan focuses on integrated development and multi-modal transport. It also brings together various stakeholders to make transport more efficient.

With this doubling, the rail network will be expanded by 177 km. The project covers five districts across the three states. Around 28.72 lakh people from 441 villages will directly benefit. Key districts that will see the most benefit include Banka, Godda, and Dumka.

Boost to Pilgrimage and Tourism

The Bhagalpur–Dumka–Rampurhat railway line also serves areas with important cultural and religious sites. Doubling of the track will strengthen connections to pilgrim towns such as Deoghar, home to Baba Baidyanath Dham, and Tarapith, known for the Shakti Peeth temple. This will help both local tourism and cultural travel.

Apart from pilgrims, general travelers and businesses in the region will see better connectivity, reduced travel time, and improved rail services.
