Maharashtra’s Expressway Boom: December 2024 Update on 19 Key Projects

STN: The state of Maharashtra continues its efforts to improve road connectivity through access-controlled greenfield expressways. These projects aim to enhance connectivity across regions, support economic growth, and reduce travel time. Below is an update on the ongoing and proposed Maharashtra’s expressway projects.

Key Projects Under Development in Maharashtra’s Expressway Network

Samruddhi Expressway Connectors and Expansions

  1. Jalna-Nanded Samruddhi Expressway Connector:
    This 179-km, 6-lane expressway has been awarded for construction. Work is expected to start soon.
  2. Shegaon Connector from Samruddhi Expressway:
    The 109-km, 4-lane project has received approval. It is currently under environmental clearance review.
  3. Samruddhi Expressway Vadhvan Port Connector:
    This 125-km, 6-lane expressway is still in the proposal stage.
  4. Nagpur-Mumbai Samruddhi Expressway Phase 4:
    The 76-km stretch between Igatpuri and Mumbai is under construction and will open by December 2024.

New Proposed and Ongoing Expressways

  1. Nagpur-Goa Shaktipeeth Expressway:
    This 802-km, 6-lane route has an approved Detailed Project Report (DPR). However, land acquisition is currently on hold.
  2. Pune-Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Expressway:
    This 260-km, 6-lane project awaits a revised DPR.
  3. Pune-Bengaluru Expressway:
    Spanning 700 km with 8 lanes, this project is awaiting approval from the central government.
  4. Virar-Alibag Multi-Modal Corridor:
    This 126-km, 14-lane corridor has started phase 1. Construction is expected to commence soon.

Eastern Maharashtra’s Expressways

The Eastern Maharashtra Expressway network comprises the following projects:

  1. Nagpur-Bhandara-Gondia Expressway:
    This 141-km, 4-lane road with a 25-km spur has received financial bids. Negotiations are ongoing.
  2. Nagpur-Chandrapur Expressway:
    This 182-km, 4-lane project with a 12-km spur is also in the negotiation phase.
  3. Bhandara-Gadchiroli Expressway:
    Stretching 116 km, package 1 is under bidding while financial bids for other sections are being finalized.

Major Upcoming Expressway Proposals

  1. Nashik-Jalgaon-Nagpur North Maharashtra Expressway:
    This proposed 645-km, 6-lane road aims to connect key regions in the state.
  2. Kalyan-Latur Expressway:
    A 445-km, 6-lane expressway proposal to improve connectivity to Latur.
  3. Jalgaon-Nandurbar Expressway:
    Spanning 150 km, this 6-lane project is in the planning stage.

Progress on National Corridors in Maharashtra

  1. Delhi-Mumbai Expressway:
    Maharashtra’s section of this 8-lane expressway spans 170 km and is under construction.
  2. Surat-Chennai Economic Corridor:
    Around 400 km of this 6-lane corridor runs through Maharashtra. Land acquisition is ongoing, and bids are invited for 13 construction packages.

Other Significant Developments

  1. Pune-Nashik Expressway:
    This 210-km, 6-lane project has applied for environmental clearance.
  2. Pune Outer Ring Road:
    Spanning 173 km, this expressway will have 6-8 lanes and is currently under construction.
  3. Balavli-Patradevi Konkan Expressway:
    The revised DPR for this 389-km, 6-lane expressway is ready.
