STN: Titagarh Rail Systems Secures ₹1,598 Cr Mumbai Metro Line 6 Contract
Titagarh Rail Systems Limited (TRSL) has won the ₹1,598.55 crore contract to supply rolling stock for the Mumbai Metro Line-6. The company will deliver 108 coaches for this route. The order was placed by NCC Limited on behalf of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).
This project includes the design, manufacturing, supply, testing, and commissioning of 18 six-coach trains. TRSL will carry out the majority of the work at its Uttarpara facility in West Bengal.
What the Mumbai Metro Line 6 Contract Involves
Under the Mumbai Metro Line 6 contract, the execution period is 104 weeks. This will be followed by a two-year Defect Liability Maintenance Period. TRSL will also handle comprehensive maintenance for the next five years.
The company plans to use modern technology and a localized supply chain to complete the project. This aligns with the Government of India’s ‘Make in India’ initiative.
Pritish Chowdhary, Deputy Managing Director of TRSL, shared that the profit margins on this project are in line with other metro contracts at around 9–10%. He expects margins to improve as TRSL increases capacity and strengthens backward integration.
Mumbai Metro Line-6: A Key Project for Urban Mobility
The Mumbai Metro Line-6, or Lokhandwala–Jogeshwari–Vikhroli–Kanjurmarg Corridor, stretches across 15.31 km and has 13 stations. It is fully elevated and designed to improve east-west connectivity in northern Mumbai.
This line will intersect with several existing and upcoming metro lines, including Metro Lines 2A, 3, 4, and 7. These interconnections will enable smoother and quicker travel across the city.
According to MMRDA, Line 6 is part of a larger metro development plan. Metro Lines 4, 5 (Phase 1), 6, and 9 are scheduled to open by the end of 2025. These lines will extend metro access to new areas and help reduce road traffic.
More than a Transport Project
The Mumbai Metro Line 6 contract not only adds to TRSL’s growing portfolio but also shows progress in India’s metro manufacturing capabilities. TRSL has already delivered metro trains for Pune, Ahmedabad, and Bengaluru.
This contract supports the central government’s focus on improving public transport while reducing carbon emissions. It also brings more jobs and development to the region through domestic production.
MMRDA is also launching a new digital platform — the Mumbai One app. This app will allow passengers to plan their journey, buy tickets, and track trains in real time. It aims to simplify metro travel and promote cashless ticketing.
Mamta Shah, MD & CEO of Urban Intra Group, noted that this order reflects India’s capacity to provide high-quality metro solutions. She highlighted the collaboration between government, technology, and private sector as key to improving urban mobility.
