STN: The Delhi Metro Phase 4 project is a major step in expanding the city’s metro network. Delivery Details
The six-coach train was produced at Alstom’s facility in Sri City, Andhra Pradesh, and transported to Delhi in September. Officials from the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) received the train at the Mukundpur Depot. This train is the first of 52 trains being manufactured under a contract awarded to Alstom in October 2022.
About the RS-17 Contract
Alstom secured the RS-17 rolling stock contract valued at Rs. 2,631.36 crore. The agreement involves the production of 52 six-coach trains for Delhi Metro Phase 4, with a delivery timeline of 4.5 years. These trains will be deployed on three key lines under this phase:
- Pink Line: Extending the line by 12.5 km from Mukundpur to Maujpur.
- Magenta Line: Expanding this route by 28.9 km from Janakpuri West to RK Ashram.
- Golden Line: Introducing a new 23.6 km route connecting Aerocity and Tughlakabad.
The contract also includes the maintenance of these trains for a 15-year period.
Key Features of the New Trains
The trains under Delhi Metro Phase 4 are designed with modern features to improve efficiency and comfort:
- They are capable of reaching a maximum speed of 95 kmph, with regular operations at speeds of up to 85 kmph.
- Advanced automation technology (GoA 4) enables driverless operations, making these trains state-of-the-art in public transport.
- The lightweight structure and configuration (DMC + TC + MC + MC + TC + DMC) ensure optimal performance.
Financial Support and Depots
The financing for this phase comes from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) through a loan of Rs. 8,390 crore. Maintenance facilities for the trains are distributed across several depots:
- Pink Line: Mukundpur and Vinod Nagar depots.
- Magenta Line: Kalindi Kunj depot and an upcoming facility at Mukundpur.
- Golden Line: A new depot planned at Sarita Vihar.
Future Prospects for Delhi Metro Phase 4
The delivery of all trains is expected to be completed by 2027. Once operational, the expanded metro network will feature 2,606 coaches, significantly enhancing connectivity across Delhi.
