Kanpur Metro Trial Run Marks Progress in Underground Section

STN: Kanpur Metro reached a significant milestone by completing its first trial run in the underground section between Motijheel and Kanpur Central Station. The team conducted the test successfully on both the up-line and down-line tracks. This achievement moves the project closer to extending passenger services from IIT to Kanpur Central, scheduled to start in January 2025.

Key Details of the Kanpur Metro Trial Run

Shri Sushil Kumar, the Managing Director of Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited (UPMRC), led the trial run. Senior officials, including Shri C.P. Singh, who heads the Works & Infrastructure department, and Shri Naveen Kumar, the Director of Rolling Stock, accompanied him.

The trial run focused on testing essential systems. The team tested the up-line track to Nayaganj underground station earlier in July and completed testing on the down-line in October. Today’s trial extended the run to Kanpur Central after engineers installed critical infrastructure such as tracks, signals, Third Rail systems, and power supply.

For the first time, the engineers energized the Third Rail during this trial. The train operated at low speeds in Automatic Train Protection (ATP) mode, enabling the team to verify the software locations of signals, axle counters, and other track equipment. The engineers plan to make adjustments based on these tests and conduct high-speed trials in the next phases.

Upcoming Metro Extension and Station Details

Kanpur Metro currently operates a 9 km stretch of the Priority Corridor between IIT and Motijheel. The upcoming extension to Kanpur Central will add five underground stations:

  1. Chunniganj
  2. Naveen Market
  3. Bada Chauraha
  4. Nayaganj
  5. Kanpur Central

The team expects this extension to become operational in January 2025. It will enhance Kanpur’s public transport network by reducing travel time and congestion. The underground route will pass through busy commercial areas, addressing urban traffic issues and supporting economic growth.

Progress on Kanpur Metro Project

Kanpur Metro forms part of Corridor-1, which spans 24 km from IIT to Naubasta. The currently operational section serves passengers, while teams continue construction on the remaining sections of Corridor-1. Work is also ongoing on Corridor-2, which will connect CSA to Barra 8, covering an additional 8.6 km.

The underground section plays a critical role in modernizing urban transport. The metro aims to offer a fast, reliable, and eco-friendly solution for daily commuters in Kanpur.

Leadership Highlights the Achievement

Shri Sushil Kumar congratulated the team for overcoming challenges in constructing the underground section. He stated that the metro would transform urban mobility in Kanpur, providing residents with a smooth and efficient travel experience.

The extension to Kanpur Central marks a significant step for the city’s infrastructure. It will improve connectivity and simplify commuting for thousands of residents.

Conclusion

The Kanpur Metro’s successful trial run in the underground section between Motijheel and Kanpur Central demonstrates steady progress in the project. With passenger services set to begin in January 2025, the metro promises to deliver modern and sustainable transport solutions for Kanpur’s residents.

This development highlights the city’s efforts to build a well-connected and efficient public transport system. Future phases of the project will further enhance urban mobility in Kanpur.
