STN: India is moving forward with its plan to build its first high-speed rail line. A new update has come for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train project. The BEML-Medha consortium has submitted a bid to supply 16 high-speed trainsets.

The BEML-Medha consortium submitted the bid to the National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) on March 19. Earlier, NHSRCL had invited a single vendor bid from BEML in February.

The Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train corridor is 508 km long. It connects Mumbai in Maharashtra with Ahmedabad in Gujarat. Work on this corridor is already in progress. The project will open in phases starting from 2027.

Indigenous Train Development for Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train

India is now focusing on building its own high-speed trains. This move will reduce dependence on foreign suppliers.

In 2024, the BEML-Medha consortium received a contract worth ₹866 crore. This contract was given by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF). It includes the design and manufacturing of two prototype trainsets.

Each train will have eight coaches. These trains are being designed for a top speed of 280 kmph. The expected operating speed is 250 kmph.

Now, the consortium has placed a new bid for 16 more trainsets. The cost is estimated at around ₹250 crore per trainset. This also includes a seven-year maintenance plan.

Design and Manufacturing Plans

Local Manufacturing Gets Strong Support

The first prototypes will have about 50% local content. This number is expected to increase in the future.

Many global companies are also setting up units in India. Knorr-Bremse, a German company, is building a facility near Chennai. It will supply braking systems, doors, and other equipment.

Shift from Japanese Trainsets

Earlier, India planned to use Shinkansen E5 trains from Japan for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train. These trains can run at speeds up to 350 kmph.

However, talks with Japan faced delays due to pricing issues. Because of this, India decided to speed up its own train development.

This step supports long-term growth in the railway sector.

Phased Launch from 2027

The project will start operations in phases.

The first section is between Surat and Bilimora in Gujarat. This stretch may open around August 15, 2027.

Other sections will open later. These include Vapi-Surat, Ahmedabad-Vapi, and Mumbai-Ahmedabad.

In total, the corridor will have 12 stations across Maharashtra and Gujarat.
