STN: The Kanpur Metro Line-2 project has reached another key stage. Kalpataru Projects International Ltd. (KPIL) and Gulermak JV’s Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) Gomati achieved its second breakthrough at Kakadeo station.

Details of the second tunnel drive

TBM S-1408A, known as TBM Gomati, is a 6.6-meter Earth Pressure Balance machine manufactured by Herrenknecht. It started its second assignment from Rawatpur station and completed a 780-meter down-line tunnel drive towards Kakadeo station.

This milestone follows TBM Gomati’s first assignment in October 2024. In that phase, it constructed a 622-meter tunnel from Rawatpur station to the ramp at Agriculture University.

Scope of Package KNPCC-11 for Kanpur Metro Line-2

TBM Gomati is one of two machines working on Package KNPCC-11. The Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) awarded this package to KPIL – Gulermak JV in December 2023 for Rs. 762.50 crore. The completion timeline is 30 months.

The work includes twin tunnel construction between Agriculture Depot and Double Pullia Ramp with three underground stations:

  • Rawatpur
  • Kakadeo
  • Double Pullia

The package also involves design and construction of TBM tunnels, cut-and-cover tunnels, ramps at Double Pullia and Agriculture Depot, main line connections, and architectural finishes for all three stations.

Why this breakthrough matters for Kanpur Metro Line-2

The breakthrough at Kakadeo keeps the project on schedule. It shows steady progress on the 8.38-km underground stretch from Agriculture University to Barra-8. This line will improve connectivity for residents and reduce travel time once operational.
