The Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited has submitted a revised Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the Bhakti Shakti–Chakan corridor. The report was submitted to the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation on February 26, 2026. This update is an important step for the expansion of Pune Metro in the Pimpri-Chinchwad area.
The new DPR replaces the earlier plan. It increases the total corridor length from 42.26 km to 47.21 km. The number of stations has also gone up from 31 to 34. The total cost of the project is now estimated at ₹12,937.23 crore.
Expanded Route
The revised Pune Metro corridor will be fully elevated. It will connect key residential areas like Wakad, Pimple Saudagar, and Ravet. It will also serve major industrial zones such as Bhosari, Moshi, and the Chakan MIDC area.
The new alignment includes areas that were not well connected earlier. These include Bhosari MIDC, Landewadi, and Bhosari Gaon. This change will help daily commuters who travel between industrial and residential zones.
A 17 km stretch between Bhosari and Chakan will be developed along with support from the National Highways Authority of India. This shows coordination between different agencies for better planning.
Pune Metro Corridor: Ridership and Future Plans
The corridor is expected to see strong passenger growth. Daily ridership is estimated at 3.22 lakh by 2032. This number may increase to around 7.80 lakh by 2062.
The DPR also includes plans for future expansion. Extensions are being considered toward Talawade MIDC and Kharabwadi from the Bhakti Shakti side. Another possible extension may connect to Shewalewadi via Bhujbal Chowk.
These plans show that Pune Metro is being designed with long-term growth in mind.
Funding Plan for Pune Metro Project
The project will follow a shared funding model. Around 60% of the cost is expected to come from loans from international agencies.
The Government of India and the Government of Maharashtra will each contribute about 15.43% as equity. The remaining amount will be arranged by local bodies, including PCMC.
This funding structure aims to support smooth execution of the project.
Impact of Pune Metro on Traffic and Industry
The Bhakti Shakti–Chakan corridor is expected to reduce traffic on busy roads. The Pimpri-Chinchwad-Chakan belt has many industries, including automobile and engineering units. These areas face daily traffic problems due to heavy movement of workers.
The new Pune Metro corridor will offer a faster and more reliable travel option. It will also help industries by improving worker movement.
The DPR will now be reviewed by PCMC. After that, it will go for approvals from state and central authorities. Once approved, the project will move to the construction stage.
